The stimulus causes the sensory cell to produce an action potential that is relayed into the central nervous system (CNS). This occurs when a stimulus changes the cell membrane potential of a sensory neuron. Stimuli from varying sources, and of different types, are received and changed into the electrochemical signals of the nervous system.

This triggers an action potential, which travels along the sensory fiber from the skin.

However, this misses an important point: somatic refers to a functional division, whereas peripheral refers to an anatomic division. The somatic nervous system is traditionally considered a division within the peripheral nervous system. The somatic nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system and is associated with skeletal muscle voluntary control of body movements.
